Led Zeppelin ‘Five’ – What Does It All Mean?

Oooh, and it makes me wonder…

They haven’t performed live since their one-off gig at The O2 in December 2007. They haven’t released any new material as Led Zeppelin since the ‘Coda’ album in 1982. But could one of the biggest rock bands in history be limbering up for fresh activity?

This picture just appeared as a status update, with no explanation, on the official Led Zeppelin facebook page. It’s the word ‘five’, written in the same typeface as the famous Led Zeppelin logo designed by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell in 1973 for the ‘Houses Of The Holy’ album.

What are we to make of it? They clearly want us to think that a new studio album is on the way. After all, Led Zeppelin’s first four albums were all numbered, but there was never a ‘Led Zeppelin V’.

That’s pretty unlikely, though, given that Robert Plant has said time and again that he’s not interested in a full-blown Led Zeppelin reunion. He told Rolling Stone in 2011:

I’ve gone so far somewhere else that I almost can’t relate to it…It’s a bit of a pain in the pisser to be honest. Who cares? I know people care, but think about it from my angle – soon, I’m going to need help crossing the street.

There have been rumours for a while now that Jimmy Page and Dave Grohl are plotting something together, possibly even a Led Zeppelin/Foo Fighters tour. But it’s far more likely that the ‘five’ relates to the fifth anniversary of the O2 Arena gig, which has never been released on DVD. It would make sense to put it out now-ish, in time for the Christmas market. But hey, until we know for certain, we can always dream…

A few guesses/comments from fans so far:

Nickolas Mann

“Unheard Zep songs collected on an album, known as Led Zeppelin 5?!”

Henry Martinez

Just a guess…Jason Bonham is the official fifth new member…on an album called Led Zeppelin V! (I’m dreaming, it’s probably the O2 concert release on its five-year anniversary).

Led Zep Five? Or a countdown to something? Please let it be a world tour, oh please.

Koen Willems

They won’t make a new album, i’m sure.. not without John Bonham.

Caruana Kevin

Five years after Led Zeppelin reunited in London, there’s a new rumour that the concert is set to be released this fall.
