Welsh-born singer songwriter Marina is the newest addition to a market already studded with gems. So what makes her different from the rest? Perhaps that she sings like a Russian Kate Bush, and cites Britney Spears as a hero, “she’s worked since she was like, eight”. We were lucky enough to get our hands on this remix by Aspirins For My Children, or rather Daniel Barker, who also moonlights as wonderfully weird comedian Damien Slash.
At Marina’s recent Camden Crawl gig sweaty fans swung from the rafters as she played tracks from her new EP, The Crown Jewels, and she will spend the summer glittering at festivals including Glastonbury, Latitude and Bestival. We asked her what else she was looking forward to, “apart from that? nothing”. Never one to mince her words, Marina’s lyrics are as raw and honest as her unabashed blog posts, where she is relentlessly open when discussing her music industry opinions.
The combination of feisty potential popstar Marina, and creative wizzkid Aspirins For My Children is without doubt an exciting one, so it’s unlikely she will be disappearing back to Wales any time soon. What does she miss most about her native land? “The people, they’re a lot warmer than the people in London. Oh, and battered Mars bars!”
