Name That Band: The Song Lyrics ‘Wordle’ Challenge

After seeing this analysis of Obama’s inauguration speech, using a website called Wordle.net that automatically generates word clouds of any text, I got to thinking about bands’ lyrics.

Wordle simplifies bulky bodies of text into attractive images where the most commonly-used words appear as the largest graphics. It’s a great way to summarise themes in lengthy texts. And they look kinda nice.

The Obama speech as a Wordle image was fascinating. The most prevalent words were ‘new’ and ‘nation’, followed by ‘people’ – three words that capture the sense of change and refreshed-democracy that summed up the new President.

So how would bands fare with their words ‘Wordled’? Below are the results from taking 13 bands or solo artists and dropping the lyrics to 5 of their best known songs into Wordle.net.

But can you name the band/artist behind each image? To be fair, the size of their biggest hits does make it rather easy… But post your best guesses in the comments below and the answers will be revealed very soon.
