New Noise Five-A-Day – 21/10/09

1. Today I will play…

…a star-crossed pop wonder from Darwin Deez, plus new music from the likes of The Drums, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and Girls on NME Radio…

…plus grin-inducing chunk of loveliness ‘Star Guitar’ from the Chems and more bona-fide classics from Teenage Fanclub, The Replacements and The Clash. Not only that, but a song from Staten Island duo Cymbals Eat Guitars, whose album ‘Why There Are Mountains’ is my Album Of The Week.

Nice as that is, there’s also a chance to win a very lovely 12″ copy (with a CD stuffed inside too) of ‘Truelove’s Gutter’, the sixth studio album from Richard Hawley, along with a signed exclusive print AND the chance to meet the man himself as part of an all-expenses-paid trip to see his Sheffield Crucible gig in December.

10am–midday on NME Radio (suss out how to listen here)

2. Sleeve of the day

Lightning Bolt 'Earthly Delights'

The artwork for Lightning Bolt’s 2005 beast ‘Hypermagic Mountain’ was a waxy, eye-popping marvel, and was always going to be hard to better. Happily though, the legendary Rhode Island duo’s enormous new album ‘Earthly Delights’ is fronted by a sleeve that is every bit as absorbing. Allow it to assault your retina while your cochlea gets fried.

Future Trends ‘Moonraker’ (from No Pain In Pop blog)

Once again No Pain In Pop chucks up a gem. The interstellar synth of ‘Moonraker’ by Ohio native Andrew G Clark, aka Future Trends, starts out as a hopelessly mournful tale of lost love, before a single-finger piano melody chimes in and the shifting beat delivers just the slightest, most subtle smidge of hope.

4. Buy this

Local Natives ‘Camera Talk’ (Infectious) (buy from Rough Trade).

‘Camera Talk’ is the new single from Silverlakers Local Natives, and seems to be about leisure and tourism. It was my Single Of The Week last week on NME Radio, and you can spend money on it this week. What’s more there’s a demo of their inspired version of Talking Heads’ ‘Warning Sign’ on the flip.

5. Visual New Noise

Minneapolis bunch Total Babe released their bloody ace ‘Heatwave’ EP a couple of weeks back, and ‘(Mission Hills Country Club Wall Of) Champions’ is from it. I suggest you watch it, then buy the EP, and then hound* them to come and play in the UK very soon.

*I say ‘hound’, I mean ‘ask them very politely via a friendly DM on Twitter or something’.
