Leave Corey Feldman Alone – Pop Is Best When It’s ‘Bizarre’

Poor Corey Feldman. The 45-year-old former child star of The Goonies, Gremlins and Stand By Me has had a pretty crappy weekend.

Last week he appeared on The Today Show in the US, where he and his band – an all female, all dressed up as scantily clad angels gang called Corey’s Angels – performed the song ‘Go 4 It’. It seemed to be lifted directly from the crossover point in a Skrillex/Marilyn Manson venn diagram.

Sadly, quite a lot of people weren’t into Corey’s performance. In fact, he’s become the target of some pretty extreme online hatemongering.

Corey himself felt moved to speak out about the criticism he received and managed to do so rather eloquently, which can’t be easy when you’ve been relentlessly mocked for simply having the guts to express yourself. “Like, ‘Oh it’s so bizarre and he’s so weird and he’s so odd’… It was a song, okay?,” Corey stated in a Facebook Live post which has since been deleted, and which also saw him breaking down in tears. “It wasn’t that weird. I’m sorry if it’s not good enough for you, but you don’t have to beat us up. I just want to say that, like, why is it okay to, like, publicly shame us?”

Most of the criticism was about how strange the performance was. But since when is that a bad thing? Pop is best when it’s a little bit quirky, a little bit unsettling.

From Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ to Babylon Zoo’s ‘Spaceman’ and Take That’s jelly-spattered video for their early single ‘Do What You Like’, pop transcends cliche and crapness when it does something truly weird. With oddness comes something that sticks in your memory, gets under your skin and makes you laugh as well as making you dance.

Sure, it’s pretty crappy that people were hellbent on ripping the piss out of Corey for his performance, but Corey should embrace it. Be bizarre like The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown was in 1968 when he wore a helmet made of flames for the hit song ‘Fire’.

Be weird like Pete Burns from Dead or Alive when they released the epic 1985 pop song ‘You Spin Me Round’.

And be odd like Crazy Frog.

Embrace all of the strangeness Corey, and ignore the haters.
