There are a bunch of great mixtapes on the Web this week, so we’ve found the best ones for you, along with a few other free track downloads. Have at them, and share your thoughts below.
1. Ra Ra Riot – ‘Boy’
New York indie-rockers Ra Ra Riot will be releasing their next album, ‘The Orchard’, at the end of the summer. Co-produced by Andrew Maury and mixed by Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla, the album seems very promising, especially after hearing the first single (which can be yours by visiting the band’s official website).
2. Hesta Prynn – ‘Can We Go Wrong’
Thanks to Nylon Magazine you can download this five-track mixtape, ‘Never Hide Noise’, including songs from Casxio, Jamaica, Love Grenades and Via Audio. You can also get this fun little number from Northern State’s Hesta Prynn.
3. The Temper Trap – ‘Science Of Fear’
Another mixtape freebie, this one comes from Spin Magazine to celebrate Lollapalooza, which hits Chicago in early August. You can download tracks from Spoon, Wavves, The Big Pink, Erykah Badu and more. The Temper Trap’s ‘Science Of Fear’, which you can watch the video for below, is also up for grabs.
4. YACHT – ‘Nausea’ (X cover)
YACHT stopped by BBC Radio 6 to record this cover of X’s ‘Nausea’. The duo managed to put their own quirky spin on X’s punk rock – and this version might even be better than the original. And if you want more YACHT, you can head over to their official website, where they’re offering a free mixtape download called ‘Disco Worship’.
5. Kid Cudi & Johan Wedel – ‘Whenever Cudder Is Back (Johan Wedel Re-Touch)’
Swedish producer Johan Wedel’s just released this eight-minute-long track, sampling Vampire Weekend, Kid Cudi and some other goodies. It’s a must-hear song of the summer.
6. Asher Roth – ‘Muddy Swim Trunks’
Asher Roth and DJ Wreckineyez have released a 22-track mixtape, cleverly titled ‘Seared Foie Gras with Quince & Cranberry (Fat Free)’. Here’s the first track to give you a taste of the fat free treat.
7. ceo – ‘Everything Is Gonna Be Alright’
If you’re not already familiar with ceo, it’s the solo project of The Tough Alliance’s Eric Berglund. We gave you a free download from him in May, and here’s one more lively track to add to the collection.
8. Suuns – ‘Disappearance Of The Skyscraper’
Meet Suuns – four men from Montreal who make some hypnotising minimalist music. For a limited time, you can download ‘Zeroes’, the band’s six-song EP, for free, via Secretly Canadian. Once the music builds up and the vocals kick in, Ben Shemie sings “I killed a man when I was 11 years old/But I’m innocent” – and he makes it sound totally OK.
9. Keegan DeWitt – ‘Say La La’
Urban Outfitters have released another set of excellent tracks for free download – and this week, they’ve kicked it up to ten freebies. We’re particularly loving this one by film composer/singer-songwriter/actor Keegan DeWitt. It’s a cheery sing-along that we could listen to for hours.
10. oOoOO – ‘I Live For the Day’
Lindsay Lohan’s certainly been in the headlines lately. And apparently her jail sentence was enough to inspire Tri Angle Records to compile a mixtape of Li-Lo covers, called ‘Let Me Shine for You’. Check out the Lohan version below, then download oOoOO’s cover, which sounds pretty much nothing like the original.
