Record Store Day returns tomorrow (Saturday 21 April) with more than 230 stores taking part in the fifth annual celebration of music-as-physical-artifact.

Across the country there’ll be live sets and events featuring Keane, Billy Bragg, Dodgy, Edwyn Collins and loads more. And as usual there’s a bunch of exclusive releases being pushed out to mark the day, including the desirable likes of David Bowie’s ‘Starman’ on 7” picture disc, loads of Refused special editions, Richard Hawley’s ‘Leave Your Body Behind You’ on limited 10”, St Vincent’s ‘Krokodil’/’Grot’ on limited 7” and the Arctic Monkeys’ ‘R U Mine’ on heavyweight purple – yes, purple – vinyl.

We caught up with Alex Turner to hear what Arctic Monkeys’ frontman had to say about Record Store Day and the holy vinyl.

“We were like, ‘Yeah, lets go all out for Record Store Day. There’s gonna be a lot of bands releasing records that day, so what can we do different? Lets make ours purple!’”

He also extolled the great lost art of the B-side: “That’s one of the great things about 7”s – the mystery flipside you get with it. Sometimes you find a gem, don’t you? We always try to do something interesting with the Monkeys B-sides.”

And of course there’s nothing like finding a real record store treasure trove. “That’s the thing about vinyl, you can just while away the hours digging through records. Don’t get me wrong, I love downloads, but nothing beats stumbling across something you weren’t banking on finding…”
