You wouldn’t believe the amount of stick I got for giving ‘Stadium Arcadium’ 7/10 in a full page NME review back in 2006. Anyone would think I’d strutted into the NME office bearing nothing but a cocksock and a massive tattoo of Flea on my back, such was the general consensus of derision.
Red Hot Chili Peppers have always been a divisive set of goons, and they seem to get increasingly Marmite as they get older. You’re either fully on their funk punk train or further up the tracks planting TNT to derail every effort.
So as they edge towards releasing their tenth studio album, ‘I’m With You’, here’s the taster, ‘The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie’, a cut that’s received mixed reviews online already.
I for one can buy into this. Flea’s stopped slapping da bass for a moment and got his funk on while there’s a judicious use of cowbell throughout (always a good thing), and while John Frusciante may be absent there’s enough decent guitar lines to fill the void for now. It’s not going to spin the globe off its axis but there’s enough strut and interest to keep hopes relatively high for the LP.
What do you think, classic RHCP or not up to much?
