‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Trailer: Eight Massive Talking Points

The first full Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer has finally landed, showing more of the new film than any previous promo has. The film centres on Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), who’s tasked by the nascent Rebellion with finding out how to destroy the Death Star. Here’s the eight big talking points from the trailer, which you can see below.

1. Darth Vader’s back

Everyone suspected that Vader would be the primary villain in this film, and his unveiling in the final moments of the trailer tease the shadowy presence he will probably have in this film.

2. The protagonist doesn’t take any shit

Jones’ character, Jyn Erso, is a destructive loner who got imprisoned for forging imperial documents, possessing stolen property, aggravated assault and resisting arrest. She’s the core of the film and in this trailer especially, she looks like a complete badass. The first time we meet her she’s asked, “Can you be trusted without your shackles?”

3. It’s set in locations we’ve never seen before

One of these is called Jedha, which has been referred to as a Mecca-like location where people go on Force-based pilgrimages – even though many people believe the Jedi have now been wiped out. In the movie, Jedha is under the Empire’s control, which may be part of what causes all the trouble.

4. There aren’t any Jedi

We kind of knew this already – but what there does seem to be is a residual religion: “All is as the Force wills it,” says Chirrut Imwe, the new character played by Donnie Yen, before he takes out a load of Stormtroopers with a stick.

5. There’s loads of action

If a Star Wars trailer doesn’t have at least 10 explosions in it, it’s not good enough.

6. There aren’t any aliens

There don’t appear to be any creatures other than humans in the whole film. Given the prevalence of them in every other element of the Star Wars franchise, that’s just weird.

7. There’s a great new droid

He’s called K-2SO and he’s lethal when needs be. He’s taller and meaner than C-3PO and from his dialogue so far he seems like a funny one too. “The captain says you are a friend,” he tells Erso. “I will not kill you.”

8. Most of the characters are new

As usual, our heroes are a motley crew. We’ve already met the warrior-monk Chirrut Imwe. This is weapons expert and imperial-hater Baze Malbus:

And this is Rebellion fighter Saw Gerrera, played here by Forest Whitaker, who has already been a character in animated series The Clone Wars

MC and actor Riz Ahmed plays Bodhi Rook, the team’s pilot:

And here’s Captain Cassian Andor, who seems to be Jyn Erso’s main partner in crime:

But there are some characters returning. Mon Mothma, the leader of the Rebellion in the original trilogy makes a return:
