Silence is one of the main components of music. “The birthplace of any sound”, my first singing teacher when I was a young girl used to say. Transcending any kind of genre or time, silence is a tool that enables us to create ‘pockets of emotions’ to give space and reflect on what we hear. I tried to regroup a short selection of artists who use silence in their composition, either conceptually or musically, and help us understand why silence is so important in music.
To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Savages debut album ‘Silence Yourself’, this is the sixth episode of Pop Noire Radio, concentrating this time on the concept of silence. I chose to feature Simon & Garfunkel, ESG, Einsturzende Neubauten, The xx, Nina Simone, James Blake, David Axelrod, Miles Davis, The Gun Club and PJ Harvey.
