Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, one of rock’n’roll’s most enduring couples, are reportedly splitting after 33 years of marriage. There’s been alleged infidelity on the Black Sabbath singer’s part and Sharon appeared on The Talk, the chat show she co-hosts – think Loose Women for Americans – to announce: “I can’t keep living like this.” Here’s a potted history of their three decades as husband and wife.
1970: their first meeting
Sharon is 18 when she and Ozzy meet. Her dad, Don Arden, is Black Sabbath’s manager at the time.
1979: Romance blossoms
When Don Arden sacks Ozzy from the band, Sharon begins managing The Prince of Darkness’ solo career. Don takes it as a betrayal and had no contact with Sharon for the next 20 years.
1982: the pair get hitched
The date is July 4th and the venue is Maui, Hawaii.
1983: they have their first child
That’s Aimee, the elusive daughter who didn’t appear on the family’s hit reality show The Osbournes (more of which later). Kelly is born the following year, Jack the year after that.
1989: a much-publicised bust-up.
High on drink and drugs, Ozzy throttles Sharon and she has him arrested. She declines to press charges on one proviso: that he goes into rehab for three months. He bows to the demand.
2002: TV history is made
Profiting from the then-burgeoning world of reality TV, the family make a fly-on-the-wall constructed reality show about their daily lives. It runs until 2005 and remains a high water-mark of the genre, and is responsible for this excellent moment:
2013: Ozzy falls off the wagon
Having been clean and sober for years, Ozzy falls off the wagon and releases a statement that reveals: “I was in a very dark place and was an arsehole to the people I love most, my family.” Sharon threatens divorce, but they patch it up.
2016: alleged infidelity and split
Ozzy denies that the split is related to relapse, saying: “I have been sober for three and a quarter years. I have not touched drugs or alcohol in that time. Any reports that I am not sober are completely inaccurate.”
