Song Stories: Avelino on the Skepta and Stormzy featuring ‘Energy’

The Tottenham MC talks us through his massive tune

In early 2017 Avelino released an epic, brilliant track. ‘Energy’ featured Skepta and Stormzy and was an invigorating, essential addition to the British rap catalogue – not least because it featured two of grime’s biggest names.

We got Avelino down to the NME studios to chat about how the track came to be. He tells us it was written just after he’d come off tour with Annie Mac. “I was on the tour and I was looking at everything, looking at Section Boyz, Nadia Rose – all these people perform, obviously I’d been on tour with Stormzy before – and looking at the energy of the grime shows, and I wanted to replicate it without making grime, but in my own way.”

Avelino released the 12-track ‘No Bullshit’ project in October 2017. Don’t take your eyes off him for a second in 2018.
