Soundtrack Of My Life: Anne-Marie

Pop star, Essex girl and Rockabye-er on the songs that shaped her life.

The first song I remember hearing

Alanis Morissette – ‘Ironic’

“I think my dad bought her album ‘Jagged Little Pill’ when I was a kid so we grew up listening to her in our household. She’s so raw and I love her lyricism. It made me realise that you didn’t just have to write about broken hearts – it had humour too, which I try to put into my songs. She’s a huge inspiration. She’s a strong, badass chick.”

The first song I fell in love with

Seal – ‘Kiss From A Rose’

“Before that song, all I did was listen to songs and sing them; I never really got into the subject matter or story. But one day, someone asked me what Seal was singing about and I really listened to it, over and over.”

The first album I ever bought

Christina Aguilera – ‘Stripped’

“Her music took all of my anxiety away. I listened to it every single day after school. My friends would all be out playing and I’d be at home practising all the ad libs on that album!”

The first gig I went to

Enter Shakari  -Brixton Academy

“When I was younger, I loved dubstep and Enter Shikari were incorporating dubstep into their tunes. They are very poetic and super political, which I think is great to see.”

The song I can no longer listen to

Louis Armstrong – ‘What a Wonderful World’

“It was my Nan’s funeral song. Ever since, I just can’t listen to it. I get overwhelmed by her loss.”

The song I do at karaoke

Queen – ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’

“My sister and I first sang this on a family holiday and now we do it every time we’re near a karaoke box! I love how everyone stops giving a sh*t when they are doing karaoke and people just go for it. Even if you don’t know the lyrics to ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, you’re guaranteed to get involved no matter what.”

The song that makes me want to dance

Run DMC – ‘It’s Like That’

“Whenever it comes on at a party, I shut the place down. It’s my absolute favourite. My sister and I do dance offs to this song whenever it’s on.”

The song that reminds me of my first festival

Pete Doherty – ‘Last Of The English Roses’

“My first festival was V Festival in Chelmsford. I was watching Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse was just sitting on the stage with him the whole way through, watching. She would come up every now and again to say “make some noise for Pete Doherty!” I remember seeing him play ‘Last of The English Roses’ – it’s one of my favourite songs.”

The song I play while getting ready

Anderson .Paak – ‘Come Down’

“I could listen to his whole album [‘Malibu’] while getting ready and then not go out because I just want to listen to it again and again!”

The song I want played at my funeral

Oren Lavie – ‘Her Morning’

“I want to live forever! But if they haven’t figured out a way to do that, it’s this. This song has nothing to do with death but every time I listen to it I feel so calm, like nothing in the world matters. I want people to feel like that at my funeral. I want people to be happy and calm.”

Anne-Marie’s debut album ‘Speak Your Mind’ is out April 27.
