Soundtrack Of My Life: Daniel Sturridge On Skepta, Kendrick Lamar And Jill Scott

Before jetting off to France for Euro 2016, England and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge talks us through the tracks that have followed him through his life and career.

The first song I fell in love with
Jill Scott – ‘A Long Walk’
“It was something that was played at home. I think my sister bought it. When I was younger my mum and dad used to play a lot of reggae music; that will always be a part of me and a part of my culture. As soon as I heard this song, I liked it. It’s got a jazzy, R&B feeling to it.”

The first album I bought
50 Cent – ‘Get Rich Or Die Tryin’’
“That was the first one I purchased with my own money. It was something I played when I used to walk to school every day. I used to play that in my headphones when I was about 12 or 13.”

The song I’ll play if England win Euro 2016
Skepta – ‘Corn On The Curb’
“I like to keep it UK – I like to represent and play grime. I’d say ‘Corn On The Curb’, just because Wiley’s verse is crazy – Skepta goes in on it as well. It brings me back to my youth when I used to listen to grime and all those types of things.”

The song I do at karaoke
Usher – ‘Yeah!’
“People who believe they’ve got a little voice on start getting a bit serious on karaoke, but then there’s certain songs where you want everyone else to join in. Just for a little bit of jokes and vibes. I mean, at the end of the day, karaoke is all about the entertainment, you know what I mean? So if I go up on that stage, I’ve gotta make sure the vibes are sweet. I’ll be doing all sorts of moves.”

The song I can’t get out of my head
Vybz Kartel – ‘One Phone Call’
“I think it’s a toss-up between Vybz Kartel’s ‘Forever’ and ‘One Phone Call’. It just seems to be in my head all the time. He’s a massive artist from Jamaica and I like to play those tunes to get me into the mood before matches.”

The song that gets me in the zone
Kyla – ‘Do You Mind’
“Right now I’m feeling funky house, so this gets me into the mood. I liked what Drake did with the track [‘Do You Mind’ is sampled on ‘One Dance’]. He’ll take things from different cultures and put his stamp on that.”

The song I want played at my funeral
Kendrick Lamar – ‘B***h, Don’t Kill My Vibe’
“I don’t want it to be sad. I think it has to be a song that people can dance to and [that] could celebrate my life. It’s something people can have a vibe to.”

The song I wish I’d written
Ian Brown – ‘F.E.A.R.’
“I’d probably say ‘F.E.A.R.’, just because of the lyrics. The lyrics are really good in that song, very creative. And besides that one I’d probably say anything by Bob Marley, just because [of] the way the songs he wrote were so culturally inspiring and stopped wars.”
