Swn Festival Takeover – Free MP3s From Gaggle & Huw M Courtesy Of Huw Stephens

Unless you’re ever lucky enough to make it out to CMJ in New York or the Iceland Airwaves festival, October can be quite a barren month in festival terms, a yawning chasm between Bestival and ATP. Now, though, you only need to get as far as Cardiff for a multi-band three-day fix. Swn Festival began all the way back in 2007 and since then has become one of our favourite new band fests. Curated by BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens it now numbers 160 bands spread across a number of venues alongside a host of uber-indie sideshows (think fanzine workshops, pop quizzes and record fairs).

In honour of the ultimate lo-fi-fest, Huw’s taking over the Daily Download for a week, throwing a load of new bands (and MP3s) your way. Meanwhile I’ll keep clearing my inbox and offering up non-Swn related music too so make sure you subscribe to the blog.

Gaggle – Hidden Army
“Gaggle are a terrifying and beautiful 21-piece choir of chanting women who stalk the stage wrapped up in incredible technicolor cloaks. It didn’t take them long to get voted into NME’s Future 50 earlier this year and deservedly so. Stomping, hallucinatory, spectacular, they have to be seen live. You haven’t lived until you’ve been Gaggled!”

Huw M – Y Drôr Sy’n Dal Y Sanau

“Early reviews for Huw M say it all: “Stunningly beautiful”, “charming”, “gorgeous”. If you’ve ever explored some of the brilliant catalogue of Welsh legend Meic Stevens or have heard the Super Furry Animals’ Welsh Language album ‘Mwng’ then you’ll connect with Huw M. Here’s shimmery Welsh folkpop at its best.”
