With eight studio albums and a life of Britpop excess behind them, Blur remain one of the best-loved bands in the UK. Frontman Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree have come a long way since 1991 debut ‘Leisure’; after a successful live comeback, they released their latest – and possibly last, if you believe Coxon – album ‘The Magic Whip’ last year. It was a critical and commercial success, cementing their place as one of the biggest bands ever. No wonder their documentary, New World Towers, picked up Best Music Film at the NME Awards 2016 with Austin, Texas last year.
The Colchester, Essex group is made up of hugely disparate personalities: Albarn is a charismatic workaholic, Coxon a shy guitar virtuoso, James a foppish Dandy and Rowntree the kind of ordinary bloke you can imagine your dad drinking with down the pub. But that doesn’t get in the way when they’re blasting out ‘Song 2’ or ‘Parklife’ to 65,000 people at Hyde Park. The band knows how to party, but how well do you know Blur? Can you boss the chorus to ‘Beetlebum’? Or would run out of steam singing along to ‘No Distance Left To Run’? Prove your fandom with NME’s Ultimate Blur quiz!
