With the foolingest day of the year ushering in April on Sunday, it’s time to look back upon March and ask the month, what exactly did you give us, music-wise? Here’s some of our favourite moments – let us know yours.
Jack came back
While the wider world hasn’t heard his full LP ‘Blunderbuss’ yet, we can vouch for its quality. In the meantime, a pretty cool mash-up of Jack, Son House and Public Enemy emerged online.
Jack White, ‘Love Interruption’
March 5th saw the appearance of ‘Wrecking Ball’, an 8/10 rated album in the mag. For tracks from all the albums rated 7/10 or above across the month, check out our Best Of March Spotify playlist.
Other big releases included Grimes, Dry The River, Rusko, Madonna and Miike Snow.
The Flaming Lips collaborated with Bon Iver
Record Store Day promises more unusual releases and one-offs than ever this year, including this spacey dirge ‘Ashes In The Air’ from the Lips’ forthcoming ‘The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends’ album from two geniuses on very different points of the spectrum. And if you needed any, erm, incentive, to buy the physical release, the packaging will feature the blood of the fwends. Nice.
‘In Time To Voices’ saw the duo as raucous as ever.
These guys just don’t give up. With any luck they’ll supercede Odd Future by the end of the year.
Stream the whole thing over on the news story. What did you make of the new pretenders?
Tom Vek and Clor fans had a new LP to gush over this month as electronic fiddlers Breton finally released their widely-acclaimed debut.
The Mars Volta made their understated return
‘Noctourniquet’ saw the pair unleash another demented beast in the same breath as announcing the ATDI shows. Twist your nerves on this one, and some other album tracks as part of our Best Of March Spotify playlist:
On a Radar tip we had profiles on Peace and Zulu Winter, but it was Citizens!, with their David Lynch-endorsed glam Franz-pop that really stood out. We can forgive the vestigal exclamation mark if they keep pumping them out like this. Read the full NME Radar piece
So there’s a few things, but what was the best new music you heard this month?
