The Stone Roses – What’s Your Dream Setlist?

The Stone Roses’ comeback gig at Warrington Parr Hall – full live report and setlist

So news has just broken that The Stone Roses are playing their first gig in more than 15 years, tonight at Warrington Parr Hall. We imagine only the damned lucky few near the front of the queue right now are going to see the show, but that shouldn’t stop us speculating.

In fact it’s been even longer than 15 years since the original quartet – Ian Brown, John Squire, Mani and Reni – played live together and it’ll be intriguing to see if they’ve still got it. Scratch that; we want to know if they’ll be better. Even at their peak, the ‘Roses were dogged by muddy sound and endless chat about Brown’s idiosyncratic vocals. But their gigs were always an event and we’re entitled to hope for another now.

What can we expect then? What would you want them to play? Classics? The new songs we reported yesterday? A healthy mix?

This is how I see it. You have to start with ‘I Wanna Be Adored’, the perennial opener and statement of intent, then keep the crowd onside with the natural segue into ‘She Bangs The Drums’ and a couple of coasting favourites. ‘Good Times’ then provides the rock-out before everyone relaxes into a new tune.

Easing back into familiar gear with something like ‘Your Star Will Shine’, it’s then the flip-reverse one-two of ‘Waterfall’ and ‘Don’t Stop’ before a couple of hard-arsed belters. After another new song, it’s a big closer in ‘Love Spreads’.

‘Made Of Stone’ should capitalise on a rush of warmth for the encore, followed by ‘How Do You Sleep’ for a breather – and then it’s the epic double whammy of ‘Fools Gold’ and ‘I Am The Resurrection’ as the ageing Madcunians in the crowd turn their vintage Joe Bloggs jeans into vast sweaty galoshes.

In full then:

‘I Wanna Be Adored’
‘She Bangs The Drums’
‘What The World Is Waiting For’
‘Good Times’
[new song]
‘Your Star Will Shine’
‘Don’t Stop’
‘One Love’
‘Driving South’
[new song]
‘Love Spreads’
‘Made Of Stone’
‘How Do You Sleep’
‘Fools Gold’
‘I Am The Resurrection’

Should do the job. What do you reckon?
