From Santa Barbara gospel singer to getting upstaged by a shark at the Superbowl via a short-lived marriage to political lightweight Russell Brand, it’s been a long road for pop superstar Katy Perry.
Now you can retrace those steps with her new app, which is called Katy Perry Pop. Wouldn’t you love to have been in the meeting when they came up with that title? Anyway, it’s a hyper-real mobile game where you play as an up-and-coming musician mentored through your career by the ‘Firework’ singer; you make music, direct your music videos and “create your own pop star persona”.
Will Katy Perry Pop take off? Probably: it’s made by San Francisco-based Glu Music, the company behind Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, which garnered over 35 million downloads, 40,000 five-star reviews on the app store and had turned over $113.6m in revenue by June 2015, a year after it launched. As The Drum reported: “More than 2.7bn sessions [of Kim Kardashian: Hollywood] have been logged – a staggering 29,000 total years played.”
So this is a good racket to get into, as fellow Glu signees Kendall and Kylie Jenner (Kim’s siblings), Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj and – perhaps improbably – Jason Statham have noted.
