Watch Dizzee Rascal Remind Everyone He’s Great With This US Freestyle

Thought that the Dizzee Rascal of the present was all about taking holidays with Calvin Harris, asking who got the love with Florence or issuing questionable collaborations with Robbie Williams? Think again. Dizzee’s place as one of the Godfathers of grime remains well secured. And it was this bit of business that accounted for his surprise appearance yesterday on the US radio show Sway In The Morning, which brought further attention to the growing acceptance of grime across the pond after Skepta’s great success in the States last year. Host Sway was particularly intrigued by the concept of the genre, asking his guest (who he gushingly introduced as “an angry kid”) words to the effect of “well, what is it?”.

The highlight of the 54-minute interview is Dizzee’s take on the host’s ‘Five Fingers of Death Challenge’, which challenges the rapper in the spotlight to freestyle over five different beats. It begins at around the two-minute mark in the clip below, and the former Mercury Prize-winner, stroking his chin throughout like it ain’t no thang, proceeds to smash it.

See, Dizzee can still do it – it’d be nice if he went back to this kind of ‘Boy In Da Corner’ energy on his next album. After the mixed-at-best reception to his last record, 2013’s ‘The Fifth’ – which actually had a track on it called ‘Something Really Bad’ that featured chair-spinning buffoon will.i.am – surely the only way is up for the 31-year-old.

If you’d like to watch Dizzee discuss with Sway all manner of things – from his beginnings in grime to the infamous time he got attacked in Ayia Napa – then you can watch the full session below.
