Watch NY Punks The So So Glos’ New Video For ‘Diss Town’ – Premiere

Amid the 13 adrenaline-charged, scalpel-sharp dissections of 21st century America on Bay Ridge scrappers The So So Glos’ recent third album ‘Blowout’, ‘Diss Town’ is maybe the darkest – a wispy fog of dread rising from beneath its breezy Replacements-ish garage-punk guitars, like smoke from a drain. You won’t find a gang of prouder New Yorkers than the four-piece, made up of brothers Alex and Ryan Levine, half-brother Zach Staggers plus guitarist Matt Elkins, as anyone who follows the band on Twitter will tell you. But in stark contrast to tracks like album opener ‘Son of an American’, a fist-pumping celebration of all things U-S-A (“thin girls, thin TVs, nice watches, ice coffee, malt liquor and malt ice cream”), ‘Diss Town’ finds frontman Alex wading through “mushroom clouds of cynicism and doubt” in a city where gun shots echo through the streets and death is painted on the horizon: “that ain’t a skyline,” Levine shouts, “it’s a cemetery.”

Ahead of the group’s upcoming UK tour supporting the Hold Steady, the song’s now got a video, full of ominous doomsday vibes and the band performing in some kind of bunker decked out in guerilla warfare wear. They’re one of my favourite live bands so if you haven’t already I’d strongly recommend getting acquainted with the gritty, extremely fun ‘Blowout’ and getting yourself a ticket for one of the below dates. See you down the front, yeah?
