New Music Of The Day: Fraser A Gorman – Skyscraper Skyline Blues

Yet more aural salvation from Courtney Barnett’s Milk! Records crew. Their last compilation featured the amazing ‘Pickles In The Jar’ by Barnett, which was one of the best things she’s ever committed to tape and proof, if you will, that just because it’s a compilation, doesn’t mean it’s cack.

Fraser A Gorman proves that rule this time round, having just dropped Skyscraper Skyline Blues, which is a duet with Ella Thompson from Melbourne rockers Dorsal Fins.

Living out all his inner Evan Dando dreams, ‘Skyscraper Skyline Blues’ is the sound of a songwriter growing ever more playful as he gets more successful. Its chorus is a Stones via Gene Clarke drawl, with lashings of Ian Stewart piano (all major chords), and there are some sumptuous backing vocals a’la Dylan’s Lay Lady Lay thrown in for good measure.

The compilation, called Good For You, features new songs from Courtney Barnett, Ouch My Face, Jen Cloher, East Brunswick All Girls Choir and The Finks and is out on February 14, 2016. Like the first Milk! comp, it was recorded over just one weekend (at Newmarket Studios in North Melbourne), this time with engineer Cal Barter. It’s limited to 3000 copies, on green coloured vinyl, signed by the bands – so get involved quickly.
