How long has it been since we’ve had a genuinely thrilling guitarist to contend with? Yeah, you can certainly get into what Royal Blood, Peace and The Orwells are doing, but there’s always that nagging feeling that they wouldn’t be able to come up with something Graham Coxon, for instance, would be too proud of.
As anyone who’s seen Gengahr will attest, their guitarist John Victor is something of a virtuoso at his instrument. They first burst onto the scene about six months ago with ‘Fill My Gums With Blood’, a creeping killer of a track that presented them as a more playful Alt J – four kids with a keen eye for melody and a clean, non-pushy sound. It was great, but debut single ‘Powder’ is better. Much harder than before, it pushes Victor to the forefront, with the entire track built around his Jonny Greenwood-esque lashings. It’s out on October 27 through Transgressive Records, and St Vincent and Jack White might just wanna watch their backs – that’s all I’m saying.
