Falmouth’s Black Tambourines put in the best performance I saw at this year’s Great Escape and they weren’t even playing the main festival. Instead, they drove all the way up from Cornwall, unloaded their gear, set up a generator and played out of the back of their van. When they dropped a cover of The Troggs’ ‘Wild Thing’, a middle aged woman pushed her way to the front of the gathering crowd to join in the fun. You’d think she’d have carried on with her evening when that song was done but instead she hung around for the whole set, looking like she was having the time of her life.
Equally as exciting as that al fresco gig is their first new material since they released their self-titled debut album last year. ‘I Wanna Stay Away’ is perhaps one of the band’s finest efforts so far – surf-punk that buzzes with urgency as singer Sam Stacpoole barks “It’s not excitement, not like I want it/I wanna stay away, come back another day/Even though I said I was having fun.” Get a load of it below and grab it as a free download now.
