This Week’s Radar Band – Breton

Pick up this week’s issue of NME to read our interview with Breton, the south London-based noiseniks who are making Tom Vek lose his shit while living, recording and very possibly freezing to death in a disused bank.

Aaaaand read on now to listen to an exclusive mixtape the band have done for us, including a brand new tune by them, as well as a behind-the-scenes guide to their suitably weird HQ.

We shot them in said bank with a load of smoke bombs our photographer Tom got on the cheap off eBay, of which the band told us afterwards: “Despite being told ‘don’t move a muscle’, Roman [Breton mainman, above, holding the flare] decided to take the Jeff Goldblum approach to distract the T-Rex we keep chained up in the bank.”

Nice. The smoke alarms below are all the band’s own doing though:

They told us: “For ages we wondered why the smoke alarms didn’t work in our building – then we found out they removed all the alarms so people could smoke. There used to be massive squat parties here, so all the fire extinguishers got completely abused and ended up in this graveyard of fire-safety. This abandoned room actually used to be the secured vault where they’d store all the bank’s money. We recorded the sounds of the fire extinguishers and used them as percussion on the record.”

Said record, called ‘Other People’s Problems’, is due out on March 26.

Personally, I think my favourite thing about the bank is the fact the band say they reckon there’s a secret tube station in the vaults somewhere.

Here’s their mixtape, featuring new song ‘National Poison Prevention Week’ towards the end:

1. Karma Kid & Module Module – Try as You May
2. Balam Acab – My Boo (Refix)
3. The Weeknd – What You Need (Jaques Greene Refix)
4. Lianne La Havas – Forget (Shlomo Remix)
5. Solomon & Finder – Weather
6. Kelis & Andre 3000 – Millionaire (Graphics Refix)
7. Py & Lapalux – Moments
8. Ghostpoet – Survive It (Koreless Remix)
9. Breton – National Poison Prevention Week

And, for good measure, here’s Breton’s ‘Blanket Rule EP’:
