Why Pula is the place for sun, sea and staying up past your bed time this summer

Promotional feature with Jet2holidays If you’re making plans to spend your summer dancing by the sea, look no further than Croatia’s Pula region

It’s that time of year when the sun starts peeking out from behind the clouds and our collective thoughts turn to where in the world we’ll be spending our hot summer nights this year. Those in the know will probably already be planning their trips to Croatia’s Pula region, also known as the Istrian Riviera, a triangular peninsula just across the Adriatic sea from Venice. In many ways it’s the jewel in the country’s crown, especially when it comes to festival season.

Both Outlook and Dimensions Festivals take place at Pula’s Fort Punta Christo, and as usual both have banging line-ups this year. Outlook, which runs from 5 – 9 September, will have appearances from J Hus and Stefflon Don among many others, while Dimensions a week earlier will play host to the likes of Kraftwerk, Nils Frahm and Jon Hopkins.

But the truth is there’s far more to Pula than their festivals. In fact, the area is dotted with sandy beaches and party-all-night resorts. Just up the coast from the city of Pula itself is Umag, which has become famous not just as somewhere where you can swim, dive and surf but also for a string of beautiful beach clubs where you can feel the sand between your toes on the dance floor. Be warned, they don’t stop until the sun comes up.

If you somehow manage to get your fill of partying – or you’re just looking for an afternoon off – there’s also plenty of culture to explore. Pula is home to the Arena, one of the largest surviving Roman amphitheatres in the whole world and similar to Rome’s own Colosseum in terms of how stunningly well-preserved it is. At least you can tell your parents you got up to something other than just eat, drink, rave, repeat.

The area’s local cuisine is heavily influenced by Italy, so expect lots of pizza, pasta and risotto on the menu. Needless to say, thanks to Pula’s coastal location the seafood tends to be as fresh as it gets. That’s all without mentioning that the average bottle of beer costs just 15 Croatian Kuna, so roughly £1.75. Enough said.

The good news is, thanks to Jet2holidays it’s never been easier to get yourself to Pula this summer. They have a variety of packages available, all including 22kg baggage allowance, with great flight times to Pula from Edinburgh, Manchester, Leeds Bradford and London Stansted with Jet2.com, voted Trip Advisor’s best UK airline. So there’s really nothing stopping you from experiencing the region’s culture and party scene for yourself.
