We all know Netflix can do high-quality original drama (House Of Cards, Daredevil) and addictive comedy too (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the forthcoming Grace And Frankie); now the global streaming service is moving into music docs. Next month sees the launch of What Happened, Miss Simone?, a documentary about late jazz icon Nina Simone, but first comes The Other One: The Long Strange Trip Of Bob Weir, which tells the story of the legendary rock guitarist from his upbringing in Palo Alto, California to the massive success he enjoyed as a founding member of the Grateful Dead.
This feature-length documentary was directed by Mike Fleiss, who previously made 2011’s God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, and features brand new interviews with Weir’s family, bandmates, fans and the man himself. It also promises, as you’d expect, a “special emphasis” on Weir’s relationship with his fellow Grateful Dead founder Jerry Garcia. The documentary premieres on Netflix on May 22 and in the meantime, we’re pleased to premiere the trailer here on NME.com.
