9 notably absent characters in the Infinity War trailer

Where are they?

Yesterday (November 29) the Avengers: Infinity War trailer was unleashed on the world, hitting #1 on YouTube’s trending column and racking up 40m views within 24 hours. The most expensive film ever made is understood to feature more than 60 main characters – too many, perhaps, to fit into a 144-second trailer. Unfortunately, that meant some major Marvel characters confirmed to appear in the film didn’t make the cut: below you’ll find the greatest omissions.

1. Hawkeye

Featured in: ThorThe AvengersThe Avengers: Age of UltronCaptain America: Civil War
Who is he?
Clinton Barton. Former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, decent archer. He’s been a member of the Avengers squad in every film (despite a brief stint as a brainwashed bad guy under Loki’s mind control). The last time we saw Hawkeye, in Civil War, he had been pulled out of retirement to help Captain America, and was ultimately imprisoned by Iron Man, before being freed by Captain America once again. Presumably, he’s back to living his life at home with his wife and children, though it’s understood he’ll be rejoining the fray at some point in this film.

2. Ant-Man & The Wasp

Featured in: Ant-ManCaptain America: Civil War (Ant-Man only), Ant-Man and The Wasp (2018)
Who are they?
Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man first appeared in his origin story movie, as did Evangeline Lilly. Rudd plays Scott Lang, a former professional criminal who’s offered a technology by inventor Hugh Pym that turns him tiny but super-strong. Lilly plays Pym’s daughter, Hope van Dyne, who at the end of Ant-Man accepts the mantle of Wasp: she’s an expert martial artist and genius whose shrinking powers are equivalent to Ant-Man’s. It’s not really clear why they’re not in the trailer, but maybe in the huge fight sequences we’ve seen, they’re already in their mini forms.

3. Valkyrie

Featured in: Thor: Ragnarok
Who is she? Fan-favourite Valkyrie is an Asgardian, like Thor, who exiled herself to Sakaar after being defeated by the villainous Hela (Cate Blanchett) long ago. After she encounters Thor in Thor: Ragnarok, she sells him to Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster, but after their initial animosity, she teams up with him and escapes to Asgard. There, they battle Hela, and the film ends with the pair of them separated at the end of that cataclysmic encounter. We see Thor meeting the Guardians at the end of the trailer, but we don’t know Valkyrie’s whereabouts – presumably she’s been omitted to add more impact to her return in Infinity War.

4. Vision’s red skin

Featured in: Avengers: Age of UltronCaptain America: Civil War
Who is he? Paul Bettany’s character is an android who got the all-powerful Mind Stone implanted in his head in Age of Ultron. When we last saw him, in Civil War, Tony Stark was angry with him for getting distracted by Scarlet Witch and accidentally injuring his ally, War Machine. Anyway, in the new trailer, Vision is shown with Scarlet Witch, and without his normal red skin: instead, he looks human. How did that happen, and what does it mean for Vision’s future?

5. Nick Fury & Maria Hill

Featured in: The AvengersCaptain America: The Winter SoldierAvengers: Age of Ultron; NF only: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America: The First Avenger
Who are they? The former director and former deputy director of S.H.I.E.L.D. They essentially do a lot of dull Avengers admin, so it’s not really that surprising that they’re not in the trailer – but we can definitely expect to see them in the film.

6. Nebula

Featured in: Guardians of the GalaxyGuardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2
Who is she?
The daughter of Thanos, Nebula was initially at odds with her sister Gamora (one of the Guardians), but in Vol 2 the pair teamed up. At the end, Nebula decided to leave the crew so she could try and kill Thanos on her own. The trailer is keeping a secret of how that plan went down.

7. Cull Obsidian, Corvus Glaive & Ebony Maw

Featured in: Avengers: Infinity War
Who are they? They’re three of the children of Thanos and they’re gonna fuck shit up for Thanos in Infinity War. In the trailer we get a brief glimpse of their ‘sibling’ Proxima Midnight, but that’s it – we’ll have to wait to see the others in action.

8. The Collector

Featured in: Guardians of the Galaxy
Who is he? Benicio Del Toro’s Collector has in his possession one of the six Infinity Stones that Thanos is after to complete his gauntlet. His one is the Aether, which first appeared in Thor: The Dark World. We know he’s going to appear in Infinity War – presumably Thanos will call on him and take the Aether, aka the Reality Stone, from him. That moment hasn’t yet been revealed, though.

9. Pepper Potts

Featured in: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Spider-Man: Homecoming
Who is she? She’s the CEO of Stark Industries. The story’s pretty long with Pepper – the last time we saw her she had organised a press conference announcing that Spider-Man had joined the Avengers, only for Peter Parker to decide against it. We see him wearing his Iron suit in the trailer, so we can assume that she might have some dealings with Parker in the film, potentially kitting him out with the Stark technology.
