Christmas & Chill

Looking for the best Christmas films on Netflix UK? We’ve trawled all the major streaming services – Netflix, Amazon and NOW TV – for their greatest Christmas films, so you don’t have to. Underneath our top seven, you can also find a more complete list of the Christmas movies Netflix and NOW TV have to offer.

1. Black Mirror: White Christmas

Watch on: Netflix
In this festive edition of Charlie Brooker’s cautionary tales, two men have been living in a wintry woodland cabin for five years, but neither of them knows how the other one got there. As they finally reveal their stories, their worlds begin to melt.
Christmas-iest bit: The mind-numbing usage of Wizzard’s ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’

2. Elf

Watch on: Amazon Prime Video

As a child, Buddy (Will Ferrell in 10/10 zany form) turns up in Lapland and is adopted by ‘Papa Elf’. Growing too large for the elves’ workshop he is sent to New York City, where he devotes himself to spreading Christmas spirit.
Christmas-iest bit: When Buddy sees a department store’s hired Santa and joyfully screams: “SANTA!”

3. It’s A Wonderful Life

Watch on: Amazon Prime Video
This variation on the story of A Christmas Carol tasks a guardian angel with saving the life of a noble but suicidal man at Christmas time.
Christmas-iest bit: The sugary ending, which is all about the importance of decency and compassion.

4. The Night Before

Watch on: Netflix
Three friends’ annual Christmas Eve blowout tradition is coming to an end with the arrival of fatherhood. To bid farewell to their 20s, they search far and wide for NYC’s legendary Nutcracker Ball, feat. Miley Cyrus.
Christmas-iest bit: The pop culture-heavy scenes with Ilana Glazer’s weed thief Rebecca Grinch, whose Christmas heroes are villains like Home Alone’s Sticky Bandits and Die Hard’s Hans Gruber.

5. Dr Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Watch on: NOW TV
In this adaptation of the fantasy classic, a miserable but feared green hermit called the Grinch (a cracking Jim Carrey) decides to ruin Christmas for the town of ‘Whoville’ by stealing all their gifts. The tiny Cindy Lou Who (now The Pretty Reckless rocker Taylor Momsen) attempts to convince him otherwise by being, like, really really nice.
Christmas-iest bit: The ending, where everyone gets to be friends. N’aww.

6. Bad Santa

Watch on: NOW TV
Billy Bob Thornton stars in this black comedy as a depraved thief named Willie, who chooses his targets while posing as a mall Santa. Throughout the NSFW madness he (sort of) learns the value of Christmas. But not really.
Christmas-iest bit: When Bad Santa gets shot while trying to deliver a present.

7. Miracle on 34th Street

Watch on: NOW TV
In this third remake of the 1947 original, a mysterious man called Kris Kringle (Richard Attenborough) begins working in a department store, believed to be Santa by everyone but a young girl called Susan (Matilda and Mrs Doubtfire’s Mara Wilson). In response, Kringle does his utmost to ensure that Susan’s Christmas wishes come true.
Christmas-iest bit: The Christmas morning revelation.
