When Eddie Redmayne was cast in the new Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them, his role as the as-yet unseen character Newt Scamander looked like a difficult one to fill. The story of the ‘magizoologist’ – and writer of some of the books Harry Potter and friends end up studying at Hogwarts – takes place in 1920s New York City and has him unwittingly releasing several dangerous magical creatures across the city.
In all the trailers so far, Redmayne has looked at home as Scamander, but never so much as in this longer clip released at Comic Con over the weekend (July 23), where his bewildered earnestness shines through. Colin Farrell also steps up to the plate as the menacing American Auror Percival Graves, who’s charged with tracking down Newt.
So far we’ve not seen much of the titular beasts, but in this 145-second clip they’re all over the place: winged white things, scaled horrors and others that burrow so forcefully that they rip up the cobblestones from the streets. The plot seems to revolve around the danger of exposing of the wizarding community to America’s ‘No-Maj’ (Muggle) population, which makes Newt himself the target of multiple enemies – but all he cares about are the creatures: “We’re going to recapture my creatures before they get hurt,” he says. “They’re currently in alien terrain surrounded by millions of the most vicious creatures on the planet: humans.” Take a look below ahead of the film’s release on November 18:
