Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the Golden Globe Awards for the third and final time last night (January 11), which is a real shame because the duo were as amusing and likeable as ever – something which eluded Ricky Gervais when he hosted from 2010-12. Their opening monologue aimed zingers at The Interview, Bill Cosby and the plethora of British actors playing Americans in films, but it was their feminist take-down of George Clooney’s lifetime achievement award that provided the biggest belly laugh.
“George Clooney married Amal Alamuddin this year,” Fey explained. “Amal is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, was an advisor to Kofi Annan regarding Syria, and was selected for a three-person U.N. commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip. So tonight… her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award.” Brilliant.
