Despite being the first Netflix Original show to really take off, House of Cards is bowing out with its final season in 2018. This season, perhaps more than any other, is shrouded by controversy regarding Kevin Spacey’s departure – but allows for a new story to close out the epic political saga, with Robin Wright now alone in the lead role. Here’s what you need to know about House of Cards season 6.

What’s the latest?

After a series of teasers, the official trailer has arrived. It begins with a series of mock news segements, including one that calls Claire Underwood – now President – the “worst thing that has ever happened to this country”. What follows is a series of tense confrontations, with Underwood later warning: “The first female President of the United States is not gonna keep her mouth shut.” Watch it in full below.

A trailer released in March (which you can see below) first revealed that the show will return in “Fall” – aka autumn, and much later than its usual air date in February. Now, an exact date has been confirmed by Netflix – November 2.

Has House of Cards season 6 begun filming?

The production of the new series began last year, but the show’s filming schedule was disrupted last year. On October 31, 2017 allegations against Kevin Spacey – who played one of the lead characters, President Frank Underwood – surfaced with several accusing him of sexual misconduct.

Netflix announced a day later that production on the new episodes had been halted to allow for Netflix and Media Rights Capital (the show’s original producer) to “give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew”. On November 3, it was announced that Kevin Spacey would not be returning, nor involved with any future episodes of House of Cards.

The show began filming again in January 2018, with Robin Wright – who plays Claire Underwood – as the lead character alongside new cast members.

Is there a trailer for House of Cards season 6?

A very short teaser clip for the new season was released to mark Independence Day in the US on July 4, showing ClaIre Underwood wishing herself an, er, Happy Independence Day. The hashtag #MyTurn is also shown in the below video.

A third trailer then emerged showing Claire by Frank’s grave…

In another trailer, Underwood is seen in action, warning people to not “believe a word of” anything her husband had told them before his death and that the “reign of the middle-aged white man is over.”

In the latest trailer, Underwood warns: “The first female President of the United States is not gonna keep her mouth shut.” Watch it below.

How many episodes will there be?

On December 3, Netflix announced that the show would consist of eight episodes, as opposed to the regular 13-episode run.

Is this the last season of House of Cards?

Yes, this will be the final run of the political thriller. This was announced soon after initial allegations were made against Kevin Spacey – though Netflix insist that the decision was made beforehand.

Will the entire cast be back for House of Cards season 6?

It is currently unconfirmed which members of the show will be returning. The core of the cast – which includes faithful Underwood aide Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly) – are likely to return, should the episodes continue on from season 5’s storylines. In an recent interview with NME Joel Kinnaman confirmed that he would not be appearing in season 6, saying: “I had a one-season arc that was spread over two seasons, so I was done in the middle of the fifth.”

Will there be any new characters for House of Cards season 6?

There will be at least two new characters in the final episodes. Diane Lane, who is most well known for her award-winning role in Unfaithful in 2002, will join alongside Greg Kinnear, who previously appeared in political drama The Kennedys in 2011, among other roles. No details about their characters have been announced just yet.

What’s going to happen in House of Cards season 6?

Well, there will be no Frank – that much is certain. Claire, who at the end of the last season was confirmed as interim President, will be the show’s lead character, offering a new perspective of an Underwood in the Oval Office.

The fate of Doug Stamper, meanwhile, is up in the air – at the end of the last season Claire declined to pardon him alongside Frank. Could he finally be rotting in prison? And is Tom Hammerschmidt getting any closer to exposing the grisly murder of Zoe Barnes?
