FAMAS 2020 nominees announced: ‘Aswang’, Nadine Lustre up for awards

The winners will be unveiled later this month

The 2020 nominees for the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards have been announced.

On Monday (December 7), the slate of nods in 14 categories – and five special awards – was announced. In competition for Best Picture are Alyx Arumpac’s Aswang, Rae Red’s Babae At Baril, Jun Robles Lana’s Kalel 15 and Glenn Barit’s Cleaners.

Also in the running are Arden Rod Condez’s John Denver Trending, which won six awards at the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival last year, and Raymund Ribay Gutierrez’s Verdict, which won the Special Jury Prize at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, as the Inquirer points out.

Several of those films have also secured nods in other categories: Aswang, a documentary about President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, is also up for Best Documentary, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Editing.

Crime thriller Babae At Baril has snagged several nominations: Best Cinematography, Best Actress (Janine Gutierrez), Best Supporting Actor (JC Santos), Best Production Design, Best Screenplay, and Best Achievement in Direction.

Nadine Lustre – who released her debut album ‘Wildest Dreams’, complete with accompanying visual album, on Careless Music in October – is in the running for Best Actress for her role in 2019 romantic drama Ulan.

Lustre will face off against Babae At Baril’s Gutierrez, Angela Cortez (Jino To Marie), Jean Garcia (Watch Me Kill), Bella Padilla (Mañanita) and Kathryn Bernado (Hello, Love, Goodbye).
