Jeremy Renner was involved in an accident which has left him in hospital in “critical but stable” condition.
The actor suffered injuries following a “weather related accident” on New Year’s Day (January 1), which occurred while Renner was plowing snow in Mt. Rose Highway in Reno, Nevada.
According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, a winter storm hit the area on New Year’s Eve (December 31) which caused 35,000 homes across northern Nevada to lose power. Renner is reported to own a home near Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, 25 miles from Reno.
Sergeant Kristin Vietti, from Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, told Deadline that police “responded to a traumatic injury in the area of Mt. Rose Highway in Reno, Nevada” at 9am on New Year’s Day.
Renner, who was the only involved party in the incident, was airlifted to a local hospital. He was confirmed to be in a “critical but stable condition” at the time.
On January 2 (Monday), Renner’s representative shared that he had undergone surgery after suffering “blunt chest trauma” and “orthopedic injuries”.
In a statement to Deadline, the actor’s rep added: “He has returned from surgery and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition.
“Jeremy’s family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible doctors and nurses looking after him, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff, Reno City Mayor Hillary Schieve and the Carano and Murdock families. They are also tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.”
Renner posted a selfie to his Instagram page on January 3 (Tuesday) from a hospital bed, where he appears with facial bruising and nasal tubes. “Thank you all for your kind words,” the actor captioned the post. “I’m too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”
On Thursday (January 5) Renner posted an update from his hospital bed to social media. The actor shared a video of himself get his hair washed in the ICU. Sharing the clip to Twitter and Instagram, the actor captioned it: “A ‘not so great’ ICU DAY, turned to amazing spa day with my sis and mama. Thank you sooooo much [sic].”

How did Jeremy Renner get injured?
During a press conference on Tuesday, Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said that based on their investigation, it had been determined that Renner’s vehicle, being driven by a family member, became “stuck in the snow near his home”.
Renner went to retrieve his PistenBulley, a large snow plow vehicle weighing more than 6500 kilograms, to attempt to get the vehicle moving. After towing his vehicle from its location, Renner existed the PistenBully to speak to the family member.
“At this point, it was observed that the PistenBully started to roll. In an effort to stop the rolling PistenBully, Mr. Renner attempts to get back into the driver’s seat of the PistenBully,” Sheriff Balaam said.
“Based on our investigation, it’s at this point that Mr. Renner is run over by the PistenBully. An eyewitness detailed seeing Mr. Renner getting into the PistenBully and not seeing him again until the PistenBully came to a rest in a pile of snow in front of his driveway.”

The sheriff’s comments align with what eyewitnesses told TMZ shortly after the incident took place: that it occurred while Renner was plowing the road near his home so his family could get out following the New Year’s Eve storm.
According to a neighbour, the plowing machine accidentally ran over one of Renner’s legs, which led to him losing a lot of blood. Another neighbour, who is a doctor, is said to have put a tourniquet on his leg until paramedics arrived. The statement provided to Deadline which reports “blunt chest trauma” suggests further injuries were sustained in the accident.
On Wednesday (January 4), TMZ reported details of the log made by the emergency service operators at the time of the incident. These notes include details from the 911 call that give further insight into what Renner’s immediate injuries were at the scene of the accident.
Renner, according to the report, was audibly groaning in the background of the call, due to his pain. The record notes supposedly show that the right side of Renner’s chest had collapsed and that his upper torso was crushed. The actor is said to have experienced heavy bleeding from his head and other unknown injuries.
Why did the accident happen?
Across December the United States experienced a huge winter storm which left many states and cities under unprecedented levels of snow. Buffalo in Upstate New York, saw approximately eight foot of snow at one point, and the city was put under a no travel advisory.
Renner had previously posted on Twitter about the high volumes of snow in the Lake Tahoe area where he was on December 12. Lake Tahoe is in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and straddles the border of California and Nevada. Sharing a picture of snow at his location, Renner tweeted: “Lake Tahoe snowfall is no joke #WinterWonderland.”
