Playground Games Creative director Mike Brown and associate art director Conar Cross were playing the game during a live stream when host Charleyy Hodson asked them if they had been inspired by any specific Mexican jungles.
Cross responded by saying that he and the team felt something was missing in jungle biomes: “one of the team members said, ‘hey, have you watched Predator?, the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger movie because that was actually filmed in a jungle in Mexico.”
“So, we watched it and realised that there is this bush everywhere. One plant you can see in the game we’ve aptly named the predator bush,” added Cross.
Predator is a sci-fi action film that was released in 1987. It features Schwarzenegger as the protagonist, who fights a technologically advanced alien in a dense jungle. Filming took place in the Palenque jungle in the state of Chiapas.
Cross didn’t specify which plant it was, or show it on screen, but could have been referring to the Mexican tree fern, which features long thin leaves. The Mexican tree fern is common throughout Predator and can be seen behind the characters on numerous occasions.
Forza Horizon 5 releases later this year, and will feature a condensed rendition of Mexico that’s approximately one-and-a-half times bigger than Forza Horizon 4. Mexico will also feature more verticality and will have 11 unique biomes for players to drive in.
Elsewhere, The Coalition, the developer behind Gears Of War 5, has revealed a tech demo showcasing the work they’ve done in Unreal Engine 5.
The developer showcased the work during GDC last week, revealing an environment with real-time lighting and shadows, and a realistic character model.
