‘Monkey lsland’ creator won’t be sharing anymore following “personal attacks”

"The joy of sharing has been driven from me"

Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert has said he won’t be sharing anything about the upcoming Return to Monkey Island from now on following comments on the game’s recent trailer.

Return to Monkey Island is the long-awaited conclusion to the Monkey Island series that began in 1990 with The Secret of Monkey Island and had its most recent release over thirty years ago in 1991 with Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge.

The game is being developed by Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox studio which is working with Devolver Digital, and Disney’s Lucasfilm Games.

Gilbert is known for talking to fans, which can be a double-edged sword. His Grumpy Gamer blog has been in operation since 2004 and he’s now shut it down as a result of negative comments.

The comments started pouring into his site following the release of the recent Return to Monkey Island trailer. The newest instalment of the series features a very different art style from the other two, which seemed to be people’s main point of criticism.

In response to the comments, Gilbert wrote: “I’m shutting down comments. People are just being mean and I’m having to delete personal attack comments. It’s an amazing game and everyone on the team is very proud of it. Play it or don’t play it but don’t ruin it for everyone else. I won’t be posting anymore about the game. The joy of sharing has been driven from me.”

This isn’t the first time Gilbert has engaged in online debate with critics of his work, time will tell if Gilbert chooses to remain out of the public eye for long.
