“CTRL! A SONG FOR 2020… This is not a song from M.I.A’s upcoming highly anticipated IIIIIIth LP. It was made for the HERE + NOW, TODAY,” she wrote on social media.

At the start of the song, which arrives with an animated lyric video, M.I.A. delivers the lines: “Hands up!/ Hand down!/ Wake Up!/ Snap Out!/ We gon stand up/ When they try to/ Control“. She goes on to reference “freedom of speech”, “war and peace” and Gucci Gang.

Elsewhere in the announcement post, M.I.A. voiced her support for Julian Assange. She’s defended and spoken with the WikiLeaks founder on a number of occasions in the past, and last year performed at the ‘Don’t Extradite Assange’ event outside the Home Office in London.

Back in March, M.I.A. offered up her first new music in three years with ‘OHMNI 202091’. It arrived on the 15th anniversary of her debut record ‘Arular’.

The musician’s last full-length album, ‘AIM’, was released in 2016. Ahead of its release, she said that it would be her final solo project. “I wanna go and do some other stuff and take some time out,” she reasoned.
