The French band have dedicated the new song to the late Philippe Zdar

Phoenix have released their first new single in two years, ‘Identical’ – you can listen to it below.

It comes after the French band teased on social media earlier in the week that they would releasing a new track, sharing a video clip of a jacket set alight with the word ‘Phoenix’ on it.

They last released an album in June 2017 with ‘Ti Amo’ while their last release, ‘Monologue’, came out in April 2018 for that year’s Record Store Day.

Now, Phoenix have shared the new track, writing on Twitter: “IDENTICAL. From the original soundtrack of the upcoming motion picture ‘On The Rocks’.”

They added that ‘Identical’ was released in memory of Philippe Zdar, the French producer, DJ and Cassius member who died last year at the age of 50.

On The Rocks is a new film written and directed by Sofia Coppola that stars Bill Murray, Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans.

A press release for the film reads: “Faced with sudden doubts about her marriage, a young New York mother (Jones) teams up with her larger-than-life playboy father (Murray) to tail her husband (Wayans) in this bittersweet comedy.”

Back in December Motorbass Studio, the Paris studio of the band’s late collaborator Philippe Zdar, confirmed that Phoenix were working on new material there.

The band paid tribute to Zdar in June 2019 following his passing, writing: “Philippe was legendary.⁣⁣ Of course, our music owes so much to him, he who spent hundreds and hundreds of hours lifting us up with the breath of his talent, his enthusiasm and his kindness.⁣⁣

“But much more, he taught us that you could raise your life, Friendship, Love to the rank of major art. In all these areas he was an absolute genius.”
