Which cities and venues will Download be staged in this year?

Download Festival made its Aussie debut in Melbourne in 2018, and expanded to include a Sydney stop last year. And in 2020, Download was set to return to both cities.

On March 12, Download confirmed it would not go ahead this year, after headliners My Chemical Romance postponed their Australia and New Zealand tour amid coronavirus fears.

As for venues, Download would have taken place at Melbourne Showgrounds, leaving the Flemington Racecourse, its Melbourne home of two years.

Download Festival Sydney was initially supposed to be staged in Parramatta Park. On February 14, organisers announced it would be moved to The Domain in the city’s CBD.

Festival organisers had decided to shift Sydney venues after independent external consultants advised that the original site would not safely accommodate the number of people attending, the stages or crowd movement.

When does Download Australia 2020 take place?

Download Festival would have taken place in Melbourne on Friday, March 20 and Sydney on Saturday, March 21.

On March 10, a rep for Download had confirmed to NME Australia that the festival would go ahead as planned, despite the global coronavirus outbreak that has led to the cancellation and postponement of numerous music-related gatherings worldwide.

When asked if Download would introduce new measures to allay the potential spread of the coronavirus at the events, the rep said, “Safety of our artists, fans, and staff is always our top priority and planned for accordingly.”

Who’s on the lineup for Download Australia 2020?

Download hds managed to nab perhaps the festival booking of the year in headliners My Chemical Romance, who reunited late last year after a six-year split. Gerard and Mikey Way, Frank Iero, Ray Toro and Jarrod Alexander would have brought the black parade back to Melbourne and Sydney, their only Australian shows this year.

Bands which were set to play their only Aussie shows at Download were Clutch and Alestorm. Other notable acts on the lineup were Deftones, Jimmy Eat World, Ministry, In Flames, Testament, Carcass, Hands Like Houses and In Hearts Wake.

Also on the bill were The Hu, Baroness, Ne Obliviscaris, Bodyjar, New Years Day, Clowns, Venom Prison, Skynd, Thornhill, Disentomb, Stand Atlantic, Plini, Redhook and Dregg.

On January 22, Download announced the addition of three Aussie acts to the bill: Brisbane alternative rock act Dead Letter Circus, Sydney outfit Hellions and Melbourne melodic death metal group Orpheus Omega.

On March 2, Lacuna Coil announced their withdrawal from Download Festival due to the ongoing novel coronavirus outbreak in their native Italy. They were due to play their only Australian shows at the festival.

“Our home region of Lombardia, Italy, is in the midst of a coronavirus outbreak,” the Milan band wrote in a social media statement. “While cancelling is heartbreaking for us, everyone’s health and safety must come first and this includes our fans.”

Replacing Lacuna Coil on the bill were Los Angeles punk outfit The Bronx. On March 6, Download announced that the Los Angeles punk outfit had joined the lineup to take over Lacuna Coil’s slot. The Gloom In The Corner and Big Nasty were also set to join The Bronx, playing at the Melbourne and Sydney shows, respectively.
