Indie games you should check out this week: September 28 – October 4

Looking for a new game to play? Here are the top indie releases you should check out this week

And just like that, another month has passed us. This week, we bid adieu to September and welcome the spooky season with all things horror and sickeningly cute – you know, just to keep things balanced. Plus, kicking off this week’s selection is an incredibly intriguing mobile game filled with intricate puzzles and dreamlike visuals.

Now, without further ado, let’s jump right into it.

HoloVista

Sure, mobile games can be incredibly addictive, but not all of them are hellbent on taking your money. Take for example puzzle games like Monument Valley or tower defence titles the Kingdom Rush series, and you realise there’s more to mobile gaming if you dig around a bit. HoloVista from Aconite looks to be something different entirely, and it’s the kind of game that can only really exist on mobile.

The game is set inside a dreamlike mansion that looks straight out of a vaporwave visual. Your goal in HoloVista is to uncover secrets and take photographs of the many oddities contained within it. You play the role of Carmen, an artist who’s tasked with taking photographs within this strange building. As you move around, both in the game and in real life, you’ll find out that there is a lot more to the house than it seems.

If the game is as good as it looks, then it’ll be incredible.

HoloVista arrives September 30 on iOS.

The Walking Dead Onslaught

The Walking Dead Onslaught isn’t actually the first VR game in the Walking Dead universe.. That honour belongs to The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, which used some of the most wonderful and grotesque physics design to create an unsettling world where you spent a lot of time driving screwdrivers into a zombie’s head.

Onslaught looks a little less terrifying than Saints & Sinners, but it boasts a lot of different weapons to mess around with and something called Progressive Dismemberment that, apparently, realistically depicts your attacks against the undead.

Onslaught also puts you in the shoes of some of your favourite characters from the AMC show, and you’ll get to further their stories a little bit more by playing them through this game. Although VR may not be a household way of gaming just yet, it really should be, and this is one of the games that could help it become more common.

The Walking Dead Onslaught is out now on PSVR and PC.

Drake Hollow

Drake Hollow is finally coming to PC. You may have seen this game or even played it as it’s been out on Xbox One for a while, but the release of this rather gritty take on Pikmin on the PC is definitely worth talking about.

The game is set in a fantastical world where evil monsters called Feral attack incredibly cute plant creatures referred to as Drake. Your mission here is simple: use whatever material you can find to try and create a functioning town and defend it. It’s a style of game that’s been fairly popular recently, but the thing that makes this game stand out is its adorable creatures. Not the evil ones that want to rip your face off, of course, but the friendly ones you’ll be protecting.

You’ll have to perfectly manage everything if you want to keep everyone alive, and that’s not an easy task to accomplish when you’re being assaulted by the monstrosities that will quite happily try and eat you. So, good luck!

Drake Hollow arrives October 1 on PC.
