Cool Sounds have shared ‘Crimson Mask’, the second single from their forthcoming fourth studio album ‘Bystander’.
The track is longer fare than usual for the Melbourne jangle group, clocking in at nearly five and a half minutes. It pushes off a stuttering blue wave groove, sings of “millenial normcore pioneers“, before soaring out with a bright instrumental. By Cool Sounds standards, it almost ranks as prog rock.

The new single follows ‘Back To Me’, released in December last year, arriving with a madcap music video, in which frontman Dainis Lacey and keyboardist Ambrin Hasnain are shrunk via tin foil hat radiation.
‘Bystander’ is due for release on February 12. The record moves away from the introspective folk of their home-recorded EP ‘Sleepers’, released in July last year, back toward the lush jangle of their early material.
Last year, Cool Sounds also released the one-off single ‘Vice’, a kitsch reimagining of The Doobie Brothers’ song ‘What A Fool Believes’. The band’s last full-length record ‘More To Enjoy’ was released in 2019.
Tonight (January 15), Cool Sounds will return to the live stage for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, playing at The Corner Hotel in Melbourne, supported by Snowy Band. The sold-out, limited-capacity show kicks off at 9:30pm AEDT.
