Thus far the showcase has taken place across three dates, however, in light of easing coronavirus restrictions the Showcase finale will take place on one night, Friday January 2021 at Sydney’s Max Watts.
A combined initiative between Mardi Gras and APRA AMCOS, Express Yourself – Queer Discovery has operated as three music showcases – with January’s performance the last in the current run – featuring performances by emerging LGBTQI+ artists alongside an established headliner.
Gordi and Electric Fields’ appearances follow on from that of the likes of headliner Montaigne and up-and-comers JamarzOnMarz and Aya Yves at the inaugural event in November, with singer-songwriter Brendan Maclean undertaking hosting duties.
At the conclusion of the series, a panel of judges will select two of the emerging artists to perform at Mardi Gras next year.
In a press release, Mardi Gras CEO Albert Kruger said, “Our first Express Yourself showcase was a resounding success, with our audience on the night empowered by such moving and high energy performances.
“There is a wealth of incredible queer artists out there and we’re so thrilled to provide recognition and support through this series.”
APRA AMCOS Chief Executive Dean Ormston added, “Express Yourself is an important new artist platform, and together with Mardi Gras, we are very excited that more music fans can come along to the gig.”
