triple j has revealed this year’s Hottest 100 countdown will tie for the most entries from Australian artists ever.
In a new statistics tease, the radio station said the poll for 2020 will have 66 songs from local acts, matching 2016’s record. The month of release which gave the most entries in the countdown was January 2020, prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
There are 26 artists making their first appearance in the countdown, while two artists are set to notch seven consecutive years in the poll. Six others are appearing for the fourth consecutive time. Three artists will have back-to-back songs in the countdown.
Voting in the poll closed on Monday (January 18), with the broadcast of the results set to begin at 12pm AEDT tomorrow (January 23). Before voting closed on Friday last week, triple j said that just 350 votes separated the number one and two spots — they have not updated that figure since then.
Gambling odds currently favour Glass Animals to take out the countdown with their track ‘Heat Waves’ over Aussie favourites like Spacey Jane, Ball Park Music, Flume and Tame Impala. The UK band recently raised the stakes by promising to tattoo the shape of Australia on each of their arses if they hit number one.
