Mallrat has returned with her first single for the year, ‘Your Love’, heralding the bedroom pop singer and producer’s new era.
Co-produced by Mallrat – real name Grace Shaw – alongside Stylaz Fuego, ‘Your Love’ is anchored by deep sub basses, crystalline synths, trappy electronic beats and Shaw’s vocals front and centre in the mix. It’s closed out with vocals sampled from Gangsta Pat’s ‘Killa Pt. 2’ – a stylistic choice Shaw explains in an accompanying statement.
“When I wrote ‘Your Love’, I was listening to a lot of old Memphis rap, like Three 6 Mafia and Project Pat,” Shaw says. “I genuinely loved producing this song, and am obsessed with the energy that the Gangsta Pat sample brings.”
‘Your Love’ arrives alongside a video Shaw made with director James Robinson and cinematographer Amy Dellar in Tasmania. Watch that below:
Shaw released previous single ‘Rockstar’ back in 2020. The same year, she spoke to NME about working on her debut album, saying it was “still taking shape” at the time. In 2021, Shaw teamed up with US electronic duo The Knocks, featuring on the single ‘R U High?’
Shaw’s last EP, ‘Driving Music’, was released in 2019. A four-star review from NME described the EP as “the sleekest she’s put out so far”.
“It’s hard to compare [Mallrat] to many of her peers,” it read. “What she’s always done has been distinctly her own, and as she rounds off some of the rough edges of her earlier work, that’s something about her that has yet to change.”
