Rebel Yell – real name Grace Stevenson – is bringing the heat to Melbourne Music Week later this month, as she hosts two exercise classes inspired by her music. Each session will see Rebel Yell leading an aerobic workout, soundtracked by her pulsing 11-track album ‘Fall From Grace’.
The events will take place on January 30 at The Curtin Hotel and feature both an early and a late class – the latter of which will be followed by a special Rebel Yell DJ set.
The innovative series first popped up while Stevenson was in lockdown last year during Sydney’s first wave of the current COVID-19 pandemic. With a fresh album and nowhere to tour it, she took matters into her own hands and developed a project that combines the visceral nature of the tracks with a physical sensation anyone can take part in.
The first taste of the ‘Fall From Grace’ workouts came back in October last year, in the form of a 40-minute video class spanning the length of the album. Each track saw Rebel Yell, along with Marcus Whale and FBi Radio’s Darren Lesaguis, demonstrate simple combinations to get your heart rate rising and blood pumping.
As an album, Stevenson says ‘Fall From Grace’ explores the intersection of “body, beat and groove”.
“I’ve always been an active person, but I’ve had bouts of laziness where I feel disappointed in myself for not exercising. During COVID I have been able to actually love exercise rather than see it as a chore,” she explained in a statement.
“Music and exercise makes sense to me and aerobics builds strength rather than expression. Don’t get me wrong, I love to dance, but this way it can be focused on fitness and strength and process, something I think is very Rebel Yell.”
Rebel Yell’s ‘Fall From Grace’ workout classes will feature as part of Melbourne Music Week’s newly formed COVID-safe program, which sees events take place over three months rather than the typically scheduled ten days.
Rebel Yell’s ‘Fall From Grace’ workouts are:
Saturday 30 – Early Show (6.30pm AEDT)
Saturday 30 – Late Show (9pm AEDT) + Rebel Yell DJ Set (11pm AEDT)
