The song, which originally appeared on Rex Orange County’s 2015 debut album ‘Bcos U Will Never B Free’, is given a woozy feel by Rodriguez, who went on to explain how she selected it.
In an interview with triple j, Rodriguez said of the cover, “I didn’t really choose it. I just pressed shuffle on my phone and I was listening to music and I was like, ‘Hm, I’m going to do this song for Like a Version.'”
“And so I did,” she continued, “I like the jazzy vibes they have and the raw instruments they involve, it’s really cool.”
She also performed her breakout hit ‘Psycho’ on the weekly segment. Watch both performances below:
Rodriguez also explained how she transitioned from TikTok creator, having amassed 2million followers on the platform, to musician.
“I started on TikTok because I wanted to get into music,” she said.
“I went down the comedy road to grab people’s attention, and then was like ‘y’all I can sing!’ to slowly insert myself into the music industry. It just happened. I’m now more of a musician than I am a TikTok person.”
‘Psycho’, which dropped in April of this year, marked the second song in Rodriguez’s career thus far after her 2019 debut. She later followed ‘Psycho’ up with ‘BEAUTIFUL & BITTERSWEET‘ in August.
