Washington – aka Megan Washington – has announced the release date of her third studio album and shared the first single, ‘Dark Parts’.
The new track, released today (May 15), has been described in a statement as having “some very Presets-ish syncopated drum bits and sudden chord changes before the chorus because why not, right?”. It also uses an uncommon 7/8 time signature.
“‘Dark Parts’ is what happens when an unquenchably creative person gets the keys back to that car they used to tear around in with the windows down and the stereo blasting. It’s emotional, not cerebral. It’s art, but you shouldn’t need to be hushed and reverential to enjoy it,” the statement read.
A lyric video for ‘Dark Parts’ has also been released, which was hand-drawn by Washington, who honed her animation skills while in isolation. Watch the lyric video below:
‘Dark Parts’ is Washington’s first music this year and comes after the singer-songwriter released a handful of singles and toured along the east coast last year. The forthcoming record – yet to be titled – is a follow-up to Washington’s 2014 album, ‘There There’, and her debut ‘I Believe You Liar’ in 2010. It will be released on August 28 through Island.
In between releasing music, Washington curated the 20th-anniversary program of Sydney’s City Recital Hall and has released the occasional cover on social media, including a rendition of Troye Sivan’s ‘My My My.’
