The last season of Orange Is The New Black had all the drama you could ask for as Litchfield became a hotbed of riots, torture, and revenge. Season 6 returns to Netflix soon and it’s currently anyone’s guess what will happen next. Here’s everything we know about Orange Is The New Black season 6 so far.
When will Orange Is The New Black season 6 be released?
They might have made us wait a little longer than usual, but Netflix has now confirmed the show will be returning on July 27.
Who will be returning to the show?
Expect all of the main crew to be back in season 6. None of the inmates died in the last season, so there’s no reason why they won’t all return. With all the prisoners being taken away from Litchfield, however, that could mean we don’t see the same guards in the new episodes. We certainly won’t be seeing Piscatella (Brad William Henke) or Humphrey (Michael Torpey) – both died in season 5.
Will there be any new faces?
It seems likely, especially given the relocation of the prisoners to new jails. No new cast members have been confirmed at present, though.
Where did season 5 leave us?
Season 5 followed a riot within the walls of Litchfield Penitentiary as the inmates protested the killing of their friend Poussey (Samira Wiley). All the action in the series took place over the course of three days, and it all ended with most of the prisoners being herded onto buses to be taken to a new location. But some prisoners remained inside, with Alex (Laura Prepon), Piper (Taylor Schilling), Frieda (Dale Soules), Suzanne (Uzo Aduba), Cindy (Adrienne C Moore), Taystee (Danielle Brooks), Red (Kate Mulgrew), Gloria (Selenis Leyva), Blanca (Laura Gomez), and Nicky (Natasha Lyonne) hiding out in the bunker.
What will happen in Orange Is The New Black season 6?
We’ll find out what happens to those inmates left in the bunker, as well as what becomes of the women taken away from Litchfield. Prison guards Piscatella and Humphrey were both killed in season 5, so expect to see the consequences of those deaths in the new episodes too.
Speaking about what to expect from season 6, Adrienne C Moore, who plays Black Cindy, recently said: “Toward the end of season five, there were some people that were agreeing to stick together, and there were some people that were looking out for themselves. We’ll see the repercussions of those decisions in this next season.”
Danielle Brooks, who plays Taystee, told Variety: “There’s no up from there. There’s nowhere you can go that’s a positive. So you’re definitely going to see all of the girls trying to figure out how to get out of this rabbit hole they’ve created. Who is loyal to whom? Who is standing alone? Who is motivated by their own personal will to get out of prison? Who lies and who tells the truth? All of that stuff will come out this season.”
Have we seen a trailer yet?
We have! The first trailer for season six dropped on July 9, with the inmates getting used to their new surroundings at Litchfield’s maximum security prison – see it below.
A bizarre new promo arrived on July 18, which saw TOWIE‘s Gemma Collins arrive at Litchfield. “Girls, I hear you talking – yes, I am the Queen of England,” she told Cindy, Ruiz, Taystee, and Crazy Eyes. “But you can call me Gemma.”
Writing on Instagram, Collins described shooting the promo as “an honour”. Elsewhere, she added: “I’ve always loved Orange Is The New Black and getting to visit the set and hang out with the girls was an absolute blast. Those ladies know how to have a good time and are my sort of people.”
A short teaser trailer was released back in June to announce the season premiere date. In it, we see a bus pulling away from the prison through the dining hall window, as the desolate room fills with tear gas. Watch it below.

How many more seasons of Orange Is The New Black will there be?
The show has already been guaranteed seven seasons by Netflix, while creator Jenji Kohan has previously spoken about Piper’s prison sentence lasting 18 months. Before season 5, Kohan judged us to be at about 10 months so, with the last series only spanning three days, that means we’ve got about eight months of TV drama left.
