Friendly Fires bring rain-sodden rave to Lovebox Festival

Kelis, Rita Ora, Dot Rotten also help celebrate the event’s 10-year anniversary

Friendly Fires closed the second day of the tenth Lovebox Festival last night (June 16), with a headline set on the main stage.

Playing tracks from their self-titled debut album and 2011’s ‘Pala’, including ‘On Board’, ‘Lovesick’ and ‘Live Those Days Tonight’, the St Albans group drew in a huge crowd despite the poor weather. “Thank you for raving in this terrible weather,” acknowledged frontman Ed Macfarlane. “Just imagine you’re on a tropical island right now.”

Closing the set with ‘Paris’, the band briefly left the stage but soon returned to perform an encore of ‘Hawaiian Air’ and an extended version of ‘Kiss Of Life’.

Earlier in the day, Kelis covered Labrinth’s ‘Earthquake’ and mixed Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ into ‘Milkshake’ during her greatest hits set on The Outdoor Stage.

Elsewhere at the festival in London’s Victoria Park, the likes of Dot Rotten, Rita Ora and Little Dragon all performed to huge crowds. On Friday, the festival played host to Crystal Castlesreturn to the capital city.

Lovebox concludes today with performances from Lana Del Rey, Patrick Wolf, Niki and The Dove, plus a headline appearance from Grace Jones.
