Wireless Festival organisers to meet with London council following gatecrashing incident

Video footage shows people rushing into the festival, several tripping in the commotion and one being tackled by security staff

Representatives from London’s Haringey Council are to meet with the organisers of Wireless Festival after gatecrashers charged into the huge outdoor event on Friday night (July 3).

During grime MC Lethal Bizzle‘s set, a crowd congregated behind one of the entrance gates, attempting to force their way into the site. With security guards trying to keep the gatecrashers out, one individual was filmed opening the locked gate, leading to a stampede of people rushing into the festival, several tripping in the commotion and one being tackled by security staff. After the gatecrashing video emerged online, festival organisers quickly released a statement saying: “This was an isolated incident that was dealt with quickly where no-one was hurt.”

Now Haringey Council has confirmed that it is meeting with Wireless’s organisers to review the event’s security in the wake of the gatecrashing incident and other video footage showing fighting breaking out at the three-day event in north London’s Finsbury Park. However, the council told the BBC that these videos are “not representative of the whole festival” and insisted that this year’s Wireless saw “tens of thousands of people enjoy themselves safely”.

Wireless Festival also hit the headlines on Sunday night (July 5) when Nicki Minaj missed her allotted set after arriving to the site over two hours late following “travel issues”. The rapper eventually appeared on stage well after 9pm – having been due on at 7pm – and performed a 30-minute medley of hits including ‘Anaconda’, ‘Super Bass’ and ‘Starships’.
